Rockwall gets its name from a below-ground accumulation uncovered by Terry Wade in 1852. When he found the wall-like accumulation, Wade was excavating a well near the Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market.

Nobody has ever identified whether the rock formation is manufactured or natural development.

Rockwall was formally platted as a community by Elijah Elgin on April 17, 1854, when he bought a 40-acre tract of land from W.B. Bowles.
